Life

is a journey

Barry D. Cohen, Ph.D.

Psychotherapy for Adults

Life is a journey is a saying that has always meant a lot to me. I think that life is a really interesting journey, at times joyous and at other times sad or quite stressful. Sometimes in the journey of life it is helpful to have someone who can assist along the way.  I believe that a therapist can offer guidance when one feels stuck, cannot find a path, or when there seem to be too many options. If you decide to pursue therapy we will develop a therapeutic relationship that is rooted in the best practices of psychological theory. We will engage in the task of addressing the problems that you present and we’ll work towards the goals that you establish.

Changing the way we respond

The Practice

It is my belief that a crucial part of psychotherapy is the relationship between therapist and client. While it is different from a personal relationship, it is still a relationship. Rapport and trust must exist in the context of a relationship that feels comfortable in order for therapy to be effective.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) helps individuals to recognize how their assumptions and beliefs contribute to negative emotions, and how to overcome psychological distress by changing these negative thoughts. CBT is supportive, interactive and direct. The therapist makes specific suggestions and focuses on changing particular problems. Much of my clinical work is based on CBT but also includes what is often called an “eclectic” approach to psychotherapy.

In case your condition requires medication in addition to psychotherapy, referrals will be made to your primary care physician and/or a psychiatrist depending on your situation.
